5 Key tips to Successful Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is indeed one of your first nurturing acts as a new mother. And definitely it is not for the faint of heart! Maybe some get it easy, and some may find the journey unexpectedly challenging. We're hoping that these key tips to successful breastfeeding will make you enjoy more this beautiful part of motherhood!

1.       Find a comfortable position - It is expected when breastfeeding that you will be spending a significant amount of time holding your baby to your breast while they feed. If this is done in an unsupported sitting position, you can get uncomfortable quickly.  It is very important that you are as much as comfortable as the baby is. You may lie down on your side with your baby facing on you or sit in a reclined position with your baby lying in your arms.

2.       Give it time, You’ll Have Enough Milk - It is very frustrating when you feel like you don’t have enough milk to satiate the hunger of your baby. If breast-feeding is tougher than you expected, try not to get discouraged. Milk production depends primarily on your baby’s needs. Your little one’s sucking stimulates the release of the hormones prolactin and oxytocin which further stimulate milk production. Your breasts have been preparing to give milk since the start of your pregnancy. So don’t worry, you will have enough milk. The more your baby nurses, the more milk you’ll have.

3.       Stay Hydrated -A breastfeeding mom loses more fluids than the average person thus it is very important to consume more water as it replenishes the body.  When nursing an infant under 6 months of age, most mothers produce about 25-32 oz. of breast milk each day. To account for this extra fluid loss, you should drink at least an additional 32 oz. of water daily to stay hydrated, for a total of about 96-104 oz. Make sure to keep water handy by having a large water bottle accessible near your favorite nursing location.  This will ensure that your body can make enough milk and that you’re staying hydrated.

4.       Take care of your nipples -The skin of your breasts is very delicate and although breastfeeding is good for you and your baby, it can be hard on your nipples! Ideally breastfeeding shouldn’t hurt but many find the reality is rather different. However, soreness shouldn’t last long as you and your baby should become accustomed to breastfeeding during the first couple of weeks. Treating problems promptly is essential for preventing further damage. With regular nursing, your skin can become dry, chapped, irritated, and even cracked over time. This can make breastfeeding a painful experience. After each feeding, it's OK to let the milk dry naturally on your nipple. The milk can soothe your nipples. If you're in a hurry, gently pat your nipple dry. If your breasts leak between feedings, use bra pads — and change them often.

5.       Make healthy lifestyle choices- Remember that your milk is the main source of your infant's nutrition and your lifestyle choices is very important. Eat a healthy diet, rest as much as possible, don't smoke, be cautious with medication and also ask your baby's doctor if your baby needs vitamin  supplements, especially if you're exclusively breast-feeding
